Takao was born in Hearthome City in the Sinnoh Region, and lived with his parents and older sister, Hiromi. They were part of the esteemed Tataeru clan who had lived in the city for generation. Soon after Takao's younger sister, Emiko, was born, Takao's parents mysteriously disappeared. Although the three children had their parent's butler to take care of them, Hiromi took charge, despite being only a teenager when it happened. When Takao entered high school, Hiromi, who was 25, decided that it was time to find a fresh start. Hiromi dismissed her parent's butler, and took the rest of their fortune, then chose to move to Goldenrod City in the Johto Region.
